The result of “Blue Valentine” receiving it’s deserved R-rating goes beyond box office dollars and increased Oscar chances. Whether Weinstein planned it or not, he just inadvertently created the best marketing campaign of the Oscar season.
Ending weeks of artistic protests and online hand wringing, the Motion Picture Association of America has reversed its decision to award “Blue Valentine,” the marital drama starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, an NC-17 rating. After a final appeal by Harvey Weinstein and Co. today, the film, which has earned attention as much for its finely tuned performances as for any explicit content, will now be rated R, which should help its awards chances. (Ms. Williams and Mr. Gosling are both indie darlings and previous Oscar nominees.) The vote by the board was apparently unanimous. NYT
